Head Coach Jesse Formaker

Jesse Formaker knew that basketball coaching was a passion of his since the time he took his place on the sidelines. From his first coaching experience as a 19 year old leading his younger brother’s YMCA team, to watching his team compete for a State Championship when he was 31, he has known that coaching was his career choice. Coach Formaker has guided many teams at many different levels, including numerous summer camps for players of all ages, 3rd through 8th grade community teams, Junior High teams, and Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity high school teams.

As a varsity coach, Coach Formaker has won 74% of his games, earned league championships at both Hayward High School and, most recently, at Franklin High School in Elk Grove, led his team to 5 league Championships, 10 straight playoff berths, won a Section Championship, won a Nor-Cal Championship, and competed in the State Championship Game. Coach Formaker was honored with the DVC Coach of the Year Award in 2010 and 2011. In 2004, Coach Formaker was named the Northern California Division II Coach of the Year by Norcalpreps.com.  He has mentored numerous young men and has seen many of his players go on to success beyond high school, including earning college degrees and play basketball at Junior Colleges, 4 year Universities, and in Division 1 NCAA programs.

In June of 2006, Coach Formaker was hired as the Varsity Head Coach at Franklin High School in Elk Grove. In his tenure at Franklin, the Wildcats have won 117 games and lost just 37, qualifying for the CIF-SJS playoffs all five years. In his first season as Head Coach, Formaker led the Cats to the Delta Valley Conference Championship and the number 1 seed in the Division 1 Section Playoffs. The 2006-2007 team won the Bella Vista Bronco Round-Up pre-season tournament for the 2nd consecutive year and in the postseason they advanced to the quarterfinal round at Arco Arena. The 2007-2008 Wildcats again qualified for the playoffs, as the number 2 seed, and advanced to a second round game at the University of the Pacific. In 2009 Franklin again hung a championship banner in the gym as they were Co-Champions of the Delta Valley Conference. Coach Formaker led the team on an improbable run, as the 7th seeded team in the SJS Section playoffs, all the way to the Section Championship game at Arco Arena. The Wildcats also qualified for the Nor Cal playoffs and after beating Lincoln of San Francisco in the first round, fell to eventual Nor Cal Champions McClymonds High School of Oakland.

In 2010 the Wildcats were league Chapmions for the second year in a row, and after earining the top seed in Division 1, advanced to the Section Championship game for the second year in a row. The Cats also advanced to the Nor Cal playoffs again. This past season, Coach Formaker and the Wildcats won their third straight DVC Championship, going undefeated on the league season. The team advanced to the Section Semi-finals, playing at Arco Arena for the third year in a row, and the fourth year in five that Formake has spent at the school. The Wildcats again qualified for the Nor Cal playoffs and upset Serra High School in the first round to notch the school's first road victory ever in the Nor Cals. Next year's team looks to continue the tradition of excellence.
